The Alsek Expedition: An Overview
The Alsek River travels 174 miles from the rugged interior of the Yukon to the Pacific tides of the Gulf of Alaska. This is a premier international wilderness journey defined by iceberg-filled lakes, sprawling glacial tongues, and the world’s most vertical coastal mountain range.
The Expedition Experience
This is an active, participatory expedition. While much of the river flow is relaxing, the Alsek is a dynamic environment where the elements dictate our pace.
- The Routine: Guests take an active role in the rhythm of the trip, including the daily setup and breakdown of our wilderness camps.
- The Challenges: We may navigate ice-choked lakes or row against powerful upstream winds. While primarily an oar-raft trip, participants may occasionally be asked to assist with paddling to navigate through specific sections or weather events.
- Requirements: Participants should be in good physical and mental health. While we provide expert guidance, a background in camping or a previous rafting experience is highly recommended for this remote environment.
Wildlife & Wilderness Highlights
- Kluane National Park: We traverse the heart of Canada’s most famous northern preserve.
- Apex Wildlife: The corridor supports the highest density of Grizzly Bears in Canada, along with 150 species of birds and frequent sightings of moose and Dall sheep.
- Goatherd Mountain: We aim for a signature trek up this iconic ridge for a bird’s-eye view of the Lowell Glacier and resident mountain goats.
